Partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation, MiCT expanded and diversified user groups in order to fill knowledge gaps, grow content libraries for communities living under transitional contexts, and develop organisational capacity of Wiki user groups to recruit and train new editors as well as manage outreach activities for future expansion.
During the summer of 2022, MiCT organized 4 workshops in different regions of Iraq to train individuals about becoming an editor and editing regularly on Wikipedia. More than 90 people participated in the program, learning how to use the Wikipedia tools while also joining the volunteer editor community committed to free-knowledge.
Workshops concluded with an Edit-a-thon where 44 Wikimedians from different cities and governorates of Iraq gathered in Baghdad to edit and create new articles about the history of Iraq. Overall, the Edit-a-thon submitted more than 400 entries into Wikipedia, a total of 656,000 bytes of valuable new content from Iraq!
As well as Iraq, MiCT supported a team in Ghana who also developed an online training module on how to become an editor. In the end, an Edit-a-thon was also held and the participants worked on editing 11 articles within the local context.
Raising the number of user groups editors in Wikipedia community contributes to continuous and extended enrichment that expands content for local contexts and communities while also making new information accessible to everyone around the world.
