Tapestry: A Digital Magazine Collecting Visions of Iraqi Justice
Art and media play a crucial role in raising awareness about injustice, prompting us to reflect on prevailing thoughts and behaviors, inspiring action, and encouraging dialogue. Over the course of seven months between 2023 and 2024, MiCT collaborated with a group of artists and journalists in northern Iraq to produce a digital magazine focused on the theme of restorative justice.
Art and media play a crucial role in raising awareness about injustice, prompting us to reflect on prevailing thoughts and behaviors, inspiring action, and encouraging dialogue. They invite us to listen, question, and seek inner peace. Over the course of seven months between 2023 and 2024, MiCT collaborated with a group of artists and journalists in northern Iraq to produce a digital magazine focused on the theme of restorative justice. This magazine aims to assist communities in acknowledging their losses, grieving, and envisioning a more hopeful future.
Titled “Restoring Hope” in Arabic, this publication is the result of a collaborative effort among a distinguished group of Iraqi journalists and visual artists, all dedicated to highlighting the atrocities faced by local communities and vulnerable social groups in Iraq. These groups include religious and ethnic minorities, as well as those who have been stigmatized or marginalized in the aftermath of armed conflicts.
The magazine seeks to capture their perspectives on how to address the harm inflicted upon them and the necessary steps to prevent such injustices from recurring. To accomplish this, a multidisciplinary team of journalists, correspondents, photographers, designers, and illustrators, along with representatives from three local organizations, worked together to uncover stories from Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Salah Al Deen, transforming them into compelling journalistic and artistic narratives.
At the end of the project, MiCT held an event in Mosul that show-cased the magazine as well as included dialogue from the journalists and artists themselves on how they approached the theme of restorative justice.
This magazine is published as part of the project "Restorative Justice: Gathering Iraqi Justice Perspectives," with support from the German Cooperation.
