Supporting Critical Voices was a protection and support program implemented by Media in The Supporting Critical Voices program, implemented by Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) and supported by Internews Europe, was designed to provide protection and support to 10 at-risk journalists in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon from August 1st to December 31st, 2024. Journalists in these regions face severe threats, including political persecution, censorship, and violence. This program offered a comprehensive support system to help these critical voices continue their vital work, despite the risks they encounter.
The 10 journalists participated in a fellowship program where they produced journalistic pieces on topics relevant to their countries. The program also connected the fellows to MiCT’s Global Fellowship Network, which provides access to professional training, language classes, and networking opportunities. This network fosters ongoing support and development for journalists working in high-risk environments.
Journalists working in conflict zones not only report on critical issues but often become part of those narratives themselves, facing unique challenges and vulnerabilities. Protecting these journalists is crucial for the advancement of democratic values and press freedom, which rely on the ability to report under difficult circumstances.
Throughout the three-month program, the fellows received guidance from two experienced mentors who helped enhance the quality of their work and supported them in placing their stories with local and regional media outlets. The individual journalistic pieces produced by the fellows cover diverse topics and offer deep insights into the realities of life in conflict zones.
This project was supported by INTERNEWS EUROPE.
