Moldova is in the news again. President Maia Sandu came first in the first round of the presidential election, but to remain in office she must pass a second round on 2 November. Following the narrow victory of the pro-EU camp in the referendum on EU accession and large-scale destabilization efforts by pro-Russian forces, Moldova is at a crossroads. What was supposed to be a resounding yes to EU accession has been a rude awakening reminiscent of David Camaron’s Brexit gamble. This time it still worked, but it has also shown that the Moldovan people are divided over their European prospects.
‘Streets of Chisinau’ represents my home city through a lens of optimism and change. Each frame captures moments of transformation, blending the old mentality with the new future. As the city evolves, I document and partake in its journey, inviting viewers to witness Moldova’s quiet resilience and its hopeful future—hopefully with a smile on their face"
Daniel Bilici, Photographer
Daniel Bilici is a Moldovan photographer, born in 1990, found an artistic interest in photography, besides the pure documentalistic reasons that he was so obsessed with before.
Bilici uses visual narratives to explore the socio-political tensions in his country. Initially doing mostly street photography and reportages at numerous protests shaking his fragile country, he then started adding subjects, usually professional models, to create a new world out of places that haven't changed for too long.
