Empowering Citizen Journalists in Syria's Democratic Transition
MiCT is proud to launch the “Training of Citizen Journalists in Syria”, a 12-month program supporting 50 aspiring reporters across the country. Funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) through the BRIDGE program, it equips participants with the skills to produce independent, conflict-sensitive stories that highlight civic engagement and community development.
The program reaches women and young people already active in local media, giving them the tools and confidence to report on issues that matter to their communities. Four intensive 10-day workshops cover conflict-sensitive journalism, fact-checking, trauma-informed reporting, and media ethics, blending local Syrian expertise with international best practices. Each participant produces one published story, with select pieces translated into English to reach a wider audience.
Building on MiCT’s experience in Syria since 2013 — from radio networks to journalist training and capacity building — this initiative strengthens local storytelling, fosters professional, sustainable journalism, and ensures that community voices are heard.
As the first citizen journalists begin their training, we’ll be sharing insights and highlights from the communities they cover as well as their final publications— follow along to see local voices come to life.
