Eritrea TV Documentary
Training TV Directors in Eritrea on social reporting
The 2018 Eritrea–Ethiopia peace took place on 8–9 July 2018 in Asmara. MiCT is the first international organisation after the peace-deal to work together with ERI TV, the national state broadcaster. In our capacity building activities we focus was social documentary in TV.
Since 2018 a political “window of opportunity” has presented itself. Triggered by the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the whole region seemed to embark on a political transition towards cooperation instead of hostility. For the past two years MiCT has been liaising with officials from the Eritrean Ministry of Information and the state-owned television ERT-TV around potential capacity building initiatives in the spirit of reconciliation and inclusiveness - using a collaborative approach and constructive journalism as ethical framework.
In fall 2019, ERI-TV hosted a 2-week TV documentary capacity building and production workshop. Over the course of 10 days, MiCT’s experts in collaboration with over 50 participants (ERI-TV producers, presenters, editors, camera people, sound engineers) produced four 20 mins TV documentaries around social issues in the country’s capital Asmara.
As a follow-up, MiCT is planning a series of 3-4 seminars in Eritrea with the aim of producing a long form documentary. Through continuous long term engagement in Eritrea and the region MiCT aims to further contribute towards a regional dialogue in the spirit of peace and cooperation.
The project was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
