Media Mapping / Libya
Over 180 media outlets in Libya have been part of a media mapping, in which MiCT and the organization Libya Analysis studied their financing sources, ownership, political links and coverage. The result shows that the high-circulation media such as TV-stations mostly are assigned to the major conflict parties. A surprising result of the media mapping was the identification of a large number of local radio stations in all parts of the country. The analysts found that these radio stations tend to be non-political, focusing mainly on content for public services, entertainment, culture and social issues. The mostly very small and often voluntarily played stations receive financial means from local administrations, through call-in broadcasts and private grants. Around 82 providers were identified in this segment – measured on the basis of a population of just under 6.5 million people, this is an amazingly high density!
