FM Waves Fighting BXW In Tanzania
Our Tanzania project manager Eva Dingel has just returned from a monitoring trip to Karagwe in the remote Northwestern Kagera region of the East African country. Together with FADECO FM, a community radio station based there, MiCT is implementing a project aimed at fighting Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW), a bacterial desease that kills banana plants. As most farmers in the region live off of banana cultivation, BXW has serious social and economic implications for more than 2 million people in the Kagera region.

Our joint project helps provide farmers with new banana plants that are resistant to the bacterium. FADECO FM is also broadcasting an information campaign, organising call-in shows and hosting expert discussions dealing with BXW in order to provide farmers with know-how and help them contain and manage the effects of banana wilt. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
