Cooperation With ORTM Mali Continues
MiCT has been active in Mali since 2013. With support from the German Federal Foreign Office, MiCT first provided consultancy to the national broadcaster “Office de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision du Mali” (ORTM) on the relaunch of its news format “Journal Télévisé” and the promotion of regional and digital content.

Subsequently, MiCT in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Mali and the University of Bamako conducted a research study to find out how local people consume and rate local media. 1.400 interviewees were asked about their perception of ORTM and its “ Journal Télévisé”. In September 2014, the findings were presented in Bamako before a high-level panel which included the then Information Minister Mahamadou Camara, German Ambassador Günter Overfeld and Director General of ORTM Idrissa Sissoko.

In December 2014, MiCT had the honour to welcome Camara at a visit to Berlin. Together with his advisor Diadji Sacko and ORTM’s TV director Mahamadou Koné, , he explored Germany’s public service broadcasting system and how the country has handled the switch to digital terrestrial television. At Stiftung Neue Verantwortung the presented “Mali Numérique 2020”, the new digital agenda for the West African country. MiCT will support the digitisation of state broadcaster ORTM.

Accordingly, our country team returned to Mali in February to conduct further research for a reform strategy paper.
